A new climate resilience strategy has been prepared after many months' work and is expected to be adopted by council.聽

鈥淎lthough the strategy prioritizes climate action, numerous initiatives within this strategy also yield additional benefits that transcend climate concerns. Often, actions aimed at reducing emissions align with those that foster dynamic and resilient urban environments, enhance public health, lower government operational and capital cost, and promote innovation,鈥 the report states.聽

For example, initiatives to reduce the use of private automobiles can encourage more walking and cycling, promoting personal health, the report states. And accelerating the adoption of more efficient heating and cooling systems can encourage technological innovation.聽

No less than 150 specific actions are recommended in the report, many of them already being pursued by the city. If all the actions were to be implemented, the city could meet its target of a 40 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, the report says.聽

Just a few of the actions include: conversion of the city bus fleet to electric vehicles, more dedicated bikeways, offering incentives for the purchase of e-bikes by low income people, expansion of the EV charging network, and offering incentives for installation of energy efficient devices such as heat pumps.
