Poor math skills
For several years now, sa国际传媒 students have scored below the provincial average on standardized math exams, local trustees have been told by district officials.聽

Chronically poor scores on math exams will add up to a renewed emphasis on numeracy skills among sa国际传媒 students, local educators vow.聽

Kids in School District 23 have fared less well than their provincial counterparts on standardized math exams, a report to trustees acknowledges.聽

鈥淭he district recognizes that students鈥 numeracy proficiency has been lower than provincial averages for several years and has become an area of focus for school administrators and classroom teachers,鈥 top officials told trustees at a recent meeting.聽

A variety of extra resources are being put into the teaching of math skills at sa国际传媒 area schools, acting deputy superintendent Jon Rever and instruction director Jordan Kleckner say. The 鈥渘umeracy development鈥 of each child is being tracked as they progress from kindergarten to Grade 12, they says.聽

鈥淭here have been significant investments in district numeracy support teams, teacher professional development, STEM-related opportunities, and numeracy assessment resources,鈥 Never and Kleckner say.聽

Their report, attached to an agenda for last nightsa国际传媒 school board meeting, does not lay out the degree to which local students are underperforming on math exams compared to students elsewhere in sa国际传媒聽

But in September 2022, trustees heard from superintendent Kevin Kaardal that local student performance on standardized Grade 4 and Grade 7 math exams had been 鈥渢rending down鈥 for the previous three years.聽

Local student performance had also been 鈥渢rending down鈥 on Grade 10 math exams, with only one-quarter deemed to be proficient or excelling in the subject, eight per cent below the provincial average.聽

From 2017 to 2022, only 50 per cent of sa国际传媒-area high school students went onto college or university, four percent below the provincial average.聽

There are 25,000 students in Central Okanagan Public Schools.
