The devices give doctors nimble and precise control over surgical tools with a range of motion that can be used in a variety of surgical procedures.听
鈥淪urgical robotics is a new technology that allows surgeons to extend their abilities to work in a confined听space with more precise movements and much better visualization,鈥 says Dr. Maurice Blitz, chief of surgery at KGH.听
鈥淭he range of procedures that can be performed with robotics is vast,鈥 he says. 鈥淲e can do more precise surgery, we can do surgery in tighter places that we couldn鈥檛 do as well before.鈥

Many new medical school graduates are fully trained on robotic surgeries, Blitz says. 鈥淎nd so, if we want them to come here, we should be available to have for them the best equipment to give the best care to our patients.鈥
It is expected the robotic surgeries will begin later this year and be mainly used for more complex urology, colorectal, and thoracic surgeries at KGH.听
Patients who undergo robotic-assisted surgeries can experience fewer complications, suffer less blood loss, and recover more quickly.听
Addition of the robotic-assisted surgeries has cost about $12 million.听
