FIREHALL WEST KELOWNA

The contractor building West sa国际传媒's new firehall submitted some requests for additional funds but the city "pushed back" and the $14.3 million project remains under budget, a report to councillors states.

West sa国际传媒sa国际传媒 newest firehall will be finished six days later than planned.

Projections are now that that firehall in Lakeview Heights will be substantially complete on Sept. 4.听

鈥淭his represents an increase of six days from the previous update and is being closely monitored. This slight delay is not expected to result in a financial impact,鈥 states a report that went to councillors on Tuesday.听

It may seem odd that staff would provide information on such a minor delay but city councillors have been stung by massive cost overruns and lengthy delays with previous municipal projects. A new water treatment plant cost $25 million more than originally planned, and the municipalitysa国际传媒 first purpose-built city hall cost more than $24 million, compared to the original estimate of $18 million.听

As a result, the city implemented a variety of measures aimed at averting similar busted budgets in the future. A key one is using fixed-price design/build or design/build contracts, along with 鈥渦sing industry project management best practices and trained professionals鈥.听

Council set a budget of $14.3 million for the new 17,000 sq.-ft. Lakeview Heights firehall, which also includes a community hall, playground, playground, and pickleball courts.听

鈥淭he project continues to be under budget but the citysa国际传媒 contingency fund has been reduced from $300,000 to $48,000,鈥 the report states. 鈥淭his will be carefully managed in the months ahead with a focus on maintaining the council-approved budget. Any unforeseen budget changes will be reported to council during future project updates.鈥

During construction, the contractor had requested some additional funds that were over budget but 鈥渢he team pushed back to obtain more favourable pricing鈥, the report says.

Until he moved to Armstrong to become that townsa国际传媒 new municipal manager, West sa国际传媒 deputy chief administrative officer Trevor Seibel had been overseeing the firehall project. With his departure, Fire Chief Jason Brolund and facilities manager Erin Goodwin will shepherd the project to completion.听
