Popular hiking trails will be lost if council grants a development permit for a 46-unit housing complex in the Tallus Ridge development, West sa国际传媒 council heard Tuesday night.
Despite letters and petitions opposed to the project in the Shannon Lake area, council awarded the permit.
The first phase of the project will see 46 units built in 12 townhouse buildings on Mountains Hollows Lane.
Opponents worried about the the loss of the popular trails as well as the developmentsa国际传媒 impact on the eco-system and wildife.
Councillors noted the land has been zoned for such housing for years.
鈥淭he zoning has been in place for many years,鈥 said Mayor Gord Milsom.
And the trails weren鈥檛 going to last forever.
鈥淚 live in an area that had some beautiful hiking trails as well,鈥 said Coun. Rick de Jong. 鈥淯nfortunately, like here, they were through private property and the owner of that property has the right to try to move forward and develop it.
They even have the right to fence it off and say no public access.
鈥淲e had the benefit of walking someonesa国际传媒 private property for the last 18 years and now they wish to move forward with development and I can鈥檛 see any reason for not supporting that,鈥 de Jong said.
鈥淭his is what itsa国际传媒 zoned for,鈥 said Coun. Garrett Millsap.
The permit includes a variance on loading zone spaces.
