Free buses for lightup
Buses will be free in Vernon on Saturday to help people get to the Downtown Vernon Association's annual Christmas lightup.
The lightup festivities take place from 5 to 8 p.m.
The event will close down a several blocks of 30th Avenue and include a bonfire and marshmallow road, food trucks, entertainment and choirs, and a visit by Santa Claus.
Also taking place downtown on Saturday is Family Saturday at the Vernon Public Art Gallery from 1 to 3:30 p.m.
New washrooms under construction
New stainless steel washrooms to be installed at Vernon's downtown bus terminus are designed to be graffiti resistant and reduce vandalism.
The existing washrooms across the street from Cenotaph Park have been removed and two porta-potties put on site until the new washroom is built.
The new facility is the same design as a unit that was installed downtown last month. A third one is to be installed at a location yet to be determined.
The locally-produced washrooms feature a graffiti resistant coating on the walls and open slats at the top and bottom, offering privacy, but still allowing police and bylaw staff to ensure there is only one person inside at a time and to see whether or not the user is in distress.
